Polishing systems for tool and mold construction

The surface technology is a unique selling point of NOVAPAX. It deals with metals and steel molds that are used in the processing and polishing of plastic objects.

The polishing process consists of a stepwise reduction in roughness by using decreasing grain size of the polish material until the surface is perfectly leveled. Previously, this task was executed using emery cloth or emery powder of variable grain size which was a tedious process that did not obtain a consistent quality.

Johann Steiner had the idea to use diamond paste made of corundum instead of emery powder. Thanks to endless tests with artificial and synthetic diamonds of different grain size and with various binders, he succeeded to create a paste that was a highly effective polish that even enabled the manufacturing of optical lenses.

Equally important for a high-gloss polish is the carrier that helps rotate the diamond paste. The best material for such a carrier was brass or plastic which is put in rotation by an electrically powered tool called ‘ring finish’. To optimally position the workpiece, a table was constructed with a clamped disk that could be rotated and swiveled.
